When people ask how David and I met and my response is “through mutual friends” I don’t think they expect the story that goes along with that. Because meeting through mutual friends is normal. Here’s our story.
I went to High Point University and Megan was my RA turned friend. I met her my freshman year and she was two years older and we were close all the way through her graduation. And then we were still close after she left me. We both had a love for sports so we would go do fun things like see Tennessee and Carolina play in the first round of the NCAA tournament one year.
So when she asked me to go watch Elon play because Wes Miller was an assistant coach, I was down. {I should probably pause to tell you that Megan is obsessed with Carolina. It will make the rest of the story more understandable.}
So it was like a Tuesday night in December and we had some adventures making it to the campus and parking and such. We walk in after tipoff and we’re sitting in the “upper deck” {ha!}. Megan apparently has a gift for spotting people in a crowd. {This turned out to be beneficial for me.} She says, “Oh look! It’s Dave and Eric Hoots. We have to go say hi.”
You should know that Megan is friends with everyone. So at halftime, I follow her down to right behind the Elon bench where some people that she knew were sitting. Somehow Dave and I struck up a conversation. I wish I could tell you what we talked about but I have no idea. But apparently we talked during the whole second half because I don’t think Megan and I ever went back to our “upper deck” seats. I do remember leaving at the end of the game and David commented that he liked my boots. He always says he knew what he was getting into from night one because {he says} I gave him a “go to hell” look. {Yeah, that does sound like me, doesn’t it?}
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Three things I almost forgot to mention…
1. So how did David and Megan know each other? Well, David’s best friend growing up was Scott who also went to HPU. {How Scott and I never met is beyond me.} Megan and Scott lived next door to each other in university apartments. When Dave had come to visit Scott, he met Megan. And remember how Megan is Tar Heel obsessed? Well David was a manager for the basketball team so when David came for a visit, Megan had a picture album from a game she went to and David was in like half of the pictures… basically a celebrity.
2. I use the term “Carolina obsessed” in the nicest way possible.
3. Joey {my new blogger friend} at hodgespodges inspired me to write about our love story. I loved reading hers… I think it’s a girl thing. We love romance books and movies so real life stories are great too. It made me feel like I knew her so much better after reading hers!
Stay tuned for part II…
