Kelly at Familiar Joy was the first real blog reader. And by that I mean, she and I didn’t know each other so she wasn’t doing it out of obligation. She started her blog right around the same time I did and I can’t even remember how she found me but I remember telling David that someone commented on my blog… and it was someone I didn’t know! She’s always been one of my favorite bloggers because she’s one of those women who seriously has it all together. She has four adorable kids and she’s a teacher. But beyond that, she has great organizing tips, her house always looks great, she wears fabulous clothing. I’ve asked her more than once how she does it all. {She has yet to really answer me on that, by the way. Maybe if you check her out and ask her the same thing, she’ll eventually do a post on it.} She nominated me for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award… which is just a weird fancy way of saying, answer these questions which may or may not remind you of those survey emails that were popular about 15 years ago. But it’s really fun – so you should do it.
1. How did you decide on your blog name?
With a last name like Hoots, you’re kind of automatically tied to owls. I like owls – they’re in my classroom and all over my home. But I didn’t want something cheesy and cliche for my blog name so when I came across Psalm 91:4, I knew I wanted to tie feathers in somehow. I also was following several fashion blogs at the time and wanted to be able to document my style. And with all that, Fashion + Feathers was born. {You can read more on that here. It was the second post I ever wrote on here almost exactly a year ago. }
2. What tip would you offer new bloggers?
+Enjoy learning the process of blogging as you go. I’ve often said that one of my favorite things is when I learn how to install a plugin or add a button to my site, it’s so exciting. Yes, I know I could pay someone to do that for me but then I wouldn’t get the thrill of doing it on my own.
+Blogging takes a lot of time so if there’s a day when you don’t have a post ready, that’s ok. Don’t put pressure on yourself. I’ve taken breaks when we’re on vacation or I’m sick but when I get back into it, I really enjoy it. That’s the reason I keep doing it.
3. What was your dream job growing up?
4. What would you love to get paid to do now?
Something in the fashion industry. Or graphic design. Maybe that’s why I love blogging so much – it helps me learn about two things that I’ve never had any training in.
5. What is your favorite season?
Is it possible to legitimately not have a favorite season? Here’s how my mind works when it comes to this question…
Summer is every kid’s favorite because it means no school and living at the pool. As a teacher, I can’t say that’s much different. But holy hotness sometimes. The other day I just walked into a store from a second row parking spot and I felt like maybe I should go home and shower.
Fall is gorgeous when it starts to cool off and I can pull out my jeans and boots. Ahhh, and hoodies and layer all my outfits. Yeah, fall fashion is definitely my favorite. And soup – gosh I love soups and chilis. Kinda craving some right now just thinking about it. But the true fall weather is here for about 2 weeks and then I swear it goes straight to 30 degrees.
Winter is not my favorite weather but it means basketball season. And Christmas, so you can’t hate that.
Spring is when the flowers start blooming – I mean, not at my house but at other people’s houses. And I can start to thaw out and get my life back after basketball season took up every second all winter. And with Spring it means summer is right around the corner. But David’s allergies are terrible so he can’t even walk outside without sneezing 18 times.
See what I mean? I have no idea. There are literally things I love and hate about each season. Betcha weren’t expecting that detailed of an answer to such a simple question. But Chelsea posted this quote this week and I just thought it was perfect.
6. What is your favorite summer outfit?
I’m super casual in the summer. Since we’ve been getting so many things done around the house this summer, I’ve spent most of my days in Nike shorts, old tennis shoes and a big tshirt with my hair in a ponytail and no makeup on. But if I actually need to look like a normal human being, I like shorts and a tee with sneakers. Something like this:

7. What is your favorite summer cocktail or mocktail?
Wine. A margarita. Sangria. I wouldn’t turn any of it down.
8. Favorite summer memory?
From this summer? Sharing the news of Baby Girl with our family + friends.

9. Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Somebody cool, obviously. Like Reese Witherspoon.
10. What is your favorite tip for balancing all the “in betweens” in your life?
Can I just steal Kelly’s answer on this? Because she just said it better than I can. “Stay organized, keep a calendar, realize that everything doesn’t have to be perfect, surround yourself with love and support, and treat yourself to something special at the end of a long week.” Treat yourself, yes. And celebrate every tiny victory.
