Things I learned in the first trimester

Pregnancy is one of those wonderfully, elusive experiences.  It’s elusive because every single one is different.  When David and I found out we were pregnant, I burst into tears {of course}.  I have several friends who’ve had babies so I didn’t feel completely blinded by what pregnancy brings.  But I have learned SO much.  Here are the things I wish I would have known…

1.  If you find out you’re pregnant early in the process {we found at about 3.5 weeks} you might feel completely normal at first.  And then, BAM!  Hello headaches, nausea and fatigue.

2.  If you’ll eat every hour to hour and a half, it’ll really help with the headaches and nausea.  You’ll feel like your life revolves around how often you eat so make sure to always have some dry cereal or crackers with you.

3.  Don’t believe anyone for a second when they call it “morning sickness” because morning is a small amount of time.  And this sickness WILL NOT limit itself to the morning.

4.  If you’re nauseous, try sea-bands.  They’ve been a life-saver for me.

5.  Never had a problem with motion-sickness?  You might now.

6.  Never been allergic to food or pollen?  You might be now.

7.  You will often wonder if you’ll ever feel like yourself again.  {A question I don’t quite know the answer to yet.}

8.  If you once were somebody who loved to go out on the weekends and constantly make plans, pregnancy might change that about you.  Mostly because it’s tiring to walk from one room to the next so getting dressed and hanging out with friends for hours after working all day somehow becomes… less important.  And your bed/the couch?  Your two new besties.

9.  I haven’t really had cravings but the things I do eat are mostly because they don’t make me want to throw up.
>>Updated: I have had a few cravings but they’ve all been things I would have enjoyed before.  I’m still waiting on a craving that’s something I would have never wanted pre-pregnancy.  I’m really into fruit – specifically raspberries and peaches since this little one is rejecting strawberries.  I really like anything with cheese – cheese and crackers, any kind of pasta with cheese in/on it, string cheese.  I don’t normally eat a lot of sweets but David did make a Krispy Kreme run at 9:00 one night because I couldn’t shut up about donuts.  Most recently?  Nerds!  But only those small boxes that have the grape and strawberry flavors together.  Actually, I could do without the grape and go straight strawberry but I don’t think they make those.

10.  Your body produces more mucus when you’re preggers so if you get sick, the snot might not ever go away no matter how many boxes of tissues you go through.  I went through 4 boxes in 4 days and I’m still stopped up.

11.  Your sleep patterns might change.  I’ve always been a heavy sleeper who sleeps easily through the night.  Well, now I wake up multiple times every night.  Not to pee.  {Ok, sometimes to pee.}  I just wake up and then struggle to go back to sleep.  Sometimes I toss and turn.  Sometimes the sleep just isn’t as restful.  Definitely different from before.

12.  Early on, you might feel some cramping and pain in your ovaries – similar to period pain.  And that’s normal.

13.  If you picked the right guy, you’ll find out that you’ve never loved him more.  Because you’ve never seen him so selfless and service-oriented.  David has taken over pretty much everything around the house because I crash every day after work.

What else am I forgetting, expert moms?  Because there’s no doubt in my mind that I’ve left things off.  A few weeks ago, I showed up to a two-year old birthday party at 4 when it started at 6.  And then just this week, I gave my students a passage to read and questions to answer (to prepare for the state-made final exam)… yep, had all the answers marked.  Clearly, I’ve got this under control.

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy, and surviving the first trimester! I have no wisdom to share whatsoever, will an encouraging cheer do instead?

  • #13…so sweet!! I’m so happy to hear that you have survived your 1st trimester and learned some things along the way!! I’m terribly frightened of throwing up or anything like that so that is my biggest fear with pregnancy LOL! xo, Biana –BlovedBoston

  • Congrats on this huge event!!! I have two children (daughter is 7 and son is 2) and I’m so done with ever going through pregnancy/babydom again. However, I love to see the new mommies posts on what all they are going through (generally to remind me how done I am!). You nailed a lot on that first trimester stuff. I like where you put you don’t know if you’ll “return to your old self” here’s the deal – I don’t think you do. Your life changes so immensely during pregnancy and after you have baby in your arms that you become a totally new person….more compassionate and also defensive (mama bear, anyone?)! It is a good change but there were times after I had mine I longed for a little piece of the old non mom me. I think that’s normal! Love my babies to the moon and back. Excited for you!!!! xo Amanda

  • This is so spot on girl!! You will get back to your old self, you’ll just be even better with a precious gift to boot! Keeping you in my thoughts!! :-)

  • This made me so happy. Congrats to you & David! The strawberry/grape nerds are the best kind!

  • hahaha all of these made me laugh so hard! So true! I think my craving was the chocolate Frosty from Wendy’s. I couldn’t eat much of anything but General Tso’s chicken without being sick. LOL! I don’t think that “momma brain” ever really goes away afterwards. haha…I’ve become so forgetful

  • Awwwww how exciting! Congratulations dear!
Pregnancy definitely treats all women differently and I hope you feel better soon! Rest up as much as you can

    Happy Medley

  • I’m so excited for you guys!! Our due dates must be really close :) That first trimester is so hard and it’s different for everyone when the nausea ends but hopefully you will be crawling out of that soon… with a whole slew of new symptoms might I add 😉 Actually the second trimester was pretty unremarkable for me the first time around, this time I will have to see :)

  • This brought me back to my 2 early days pregnancies, the first trimester is a doozy!!! I was waiting for a strange craving too, but never got one :( haha. And I totally had to take a nap after eating breakfast! But seriously once second trimester rolls around it gets so much better! Take care!

  • Such a sweet post! #BabyWantsADoughnut
Adios fresh strawberries, hello strawberry flavored Nerds 😉

  • Awwww love #13! So looking forward to that feeling <3

  • Love this post, girl! I can’t believe you’re already through the first trimester! And love #13. I’ll have to text you and tell you why I’m not sure that would be my experience! Haha! I hope the second trimester ends the motion sickness for you!

  • This is such a great post! Things I would typically “expect,” but it’s nice to see how they affect different people! I don’t know that you can ever be prepared for pregnancy–but it sounds like you’ve got this pretty well under control–minus the whole mix up bits. I do that even now and I have no excuse :)

  • I love this!!! Keeping my fingers crossed that one of these days I’ll be lucky enough to get preggers and get to experience some of these…joys? lol

Stopping by from Stuff & Things

  • Pregnancy is so weird… Haha. I’m on my 2nd and I still think to myself… what is happening? this is so weird. how does my body do this? It’s so crazy :)
