Pregnancy is one of those wonderfully, elusive experiences. It’s elusive because every single one is different. When David and I found out we were pregnant, I burst into tears {of course}. I have several friends who’ve had babies so I didn’t feel completely blinded by what pregnancy brings. But I have learned SO much. Here are the things I wish I would have known…
1. If you find out you’re pregnant early in the process {we found at about 3.5 weeks} you might feel completely normal at first. And then, BAM! Hello headaches, nausea and fatigue.
2. If you’ll eat every hour to hour and a half, it’ll really help with the headaches and nausea. You’ll feel like your life revolves around how often you eat so make sure to always have some dry cereal or crackers with you.
3. Don’t believe anyone for a second when they call it “morning sickness” because morning is a small amount of time. And this sickness WILL NOT limit itself to the morning.
4. If you’re nauseous, try sea-bands. They’ve been a life-saver for me.
5. Never had a problem with motion-sickness? You might now.
6. Never been allergic to food or pollen? You might be now.
7. You will often wonder if you’ll ever feel like yourself again. {A question I don’t quite know the answer to yet.}
8. If you once were somebody who loved to go out on the weekends and constantly make plans, pregnancy might change that about you. Mostly because it’s tiring to walk from one room to the next so getting dressed and hanging out with friends for hours after working all day somehow becomes… less important. And your bed/the couch? Your two new besties.
9. I haven’t really had cravings but the things I do eat are mostly because they don’t make me want to throw up.
>>Updated: I have had a few cravings but they’ve all been things I would have enjoyed before. I’m still waiting on a craving that’s something I would have never wanted pre-pregnancy. I’m really into fruit – specifically raspberries and peaches since this little one is rejecting strawberries. I really like anything with cheese – cheese and crackers, any kind of pasta with cheese in/on it, string cheese. I don’t normally eat a lot of sweets but David did make a Krispy Kreme run at 9:00 one night because I couldn’t shut up about donuts. Most recently? Nerds! But only those small boxes that have the grape and strawberry flavors together. Actually, I could do without the grape and go straight strawberry but I don’t think they make those.
10. Your body produces more mucus when you’re preggers so if you get sick, the snot might not ever go away no matter how many boxes of tissues you go through. I went through 4 boxes in 4 days and I’m still stopped up.
11. Your sleep patterns might change. I’ve always been a heavy sleeper who sleeps easily through the night. Well, now I wake up multiple times every night. Not to pee. {Ok, sometimes to pee.} I just wake up and then struggle to go back to sleep. Sometimes I toss and turn. Sometimes the sleep just isn’t as restful. Definitely different from before.
12. Early on, you might feel some cramping and pain in your ovaries – similar to period pain. And that’s normal.
13. If you picked the right guy, you’ll find out that you’ve never loved him more. Because you’ve never seen him so selfless and service-oriented. David has taken over pretty much everything around the house because I crash every day after work.
What else am I forgetting, expert moms? Because there’s no doubt in my mind that I’ve left things off. A few weeks ago, I showed up to a two-year old birthday party at 4 when it started at 6. And then just this week, I gave my students a passage to read and questions to answer (to prepare for the state-made final exam)… yep, had all the answers marked. Clearly, I’ve got this under control.
